Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you’re visiting SWL Male Grooming for the first time or simply trying a new treatment, it’s completely normal to have questions. We want you to feel comfortable and know exactly what to expect before you arrive.
General
Is SWL Male Grooming just for men?
SWL specialises in male grooming and our treatments, environment and techniques have been designed specifically with male clients in mind.
Where are you located?
SWL Male Grooming operates from two locations:
Worthing – our private Worthing studio offers male waxing, intimate grooming, body trimming, skin treatments and massage.
Brighton – treatments are available from our professional treatment room in central Brighton, conveniently located close to Brighton Station.
Please make sure you select the correct location when booking, as Worthing and Brighton have separate appointment calendars.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. SWL operates by appointment only and we strongly recommend booking in advance, particularly for evenings and weekends.
Same-day appointments may occasionally be available and can be booked online where availability is shown.
I’m nervous about my first appointment. Is that normal?
Absolutely. Many of our clients were nervous before their first treatment, particularly when booking intimate waxing or massage.
Your therapist will explain what is going to happen and you are always welcome to ask questions. Our aim is to create a relaxed, professional and judgement-free environment.
Male Waxing
I’ve never been waxed before. What should I expect?
Your therapist will briefly discuss the treatment with you before starting and explain anything you need to know.
Wax is applied to the treatment area and the hair is removed from the root. Depending on the area being treated, we may use different types of professional wax to achieve the best result while keeping discomfort to a minimum.
How long should my hair be before waxing?
Ideally, allow approximately 3–4 weeks of growth after shaving before your appointment.
As a general guide, the hair should be around 5–10mm long. If it is particularly long, don’t worry – your therapist can trim it if necessary.
Should I shave or trim before my appointment?
Please don’t shave immediately before a waxing appointment.
If the hair is particularly long you may trim it slightly, but there is no need to do this yourself. We’d much rather have the hair slightly too long than too short for the wax to grip properly.
Does waxing hurt?
Waxing involves some discomfort because the hair is being removed from the root, but it is usually very quick.
Most clients find the anticipation is considerably worse than the treatment itself, and regular waxing generally becomes easier over time.
How long do waxing results last?
Everyone’s hair growth cycle is different, but most clients return approximately every 4–6 weeks.
With regular waxing, many clients also find that regrowth becomes softer and less noticeable.
Can I be waxed if I have sensitive skin?
Usually, yes. Please tell your therapist about any skin conditions, allergies, medication or previous reactions before your treatment.
We may recommend postponing treatment if the skin is irritated, sunburnt, damaged or otherwise unsuitable for waxing.
Intimate Waxing
Do you offer male intimate waxing?
Yes. Male intimate waxing is one of SWL’s specialist services.
Different options are available depending on how much hair you would like removed, from tidying and shaping through to complete intimate waxing.
Do I need to be naked for an intimate wax?
For some intimate treatments, clothing or underwear covering the treatment area will need to be removed so your therapist can safely and properly perform the service.
Your therapist will explain what is required and you will be given privacy to undress and get ready.
There is nothing unusual or embarrassing about this for us – intimate grooming is simply another professional treatment.
What happens if I get an erection during an intimate wax?
Don’t panic or feel embarrassed. It is a physical response that can occasionally happen during intimate treatments.
Can you wax the scrotum?
Yes. Depending on the intimate waxing service you select, the scrotum and surrounding intimate areas can be waxed.
Professional techniques and wax designed for sensitive areas are used.
Can you wax between the buttocks?
Yes. This can be included within certain intimate waxing treatments or booked separately depending on the service required.
Can I choose exactly what hair I want removed?
Of course. You don’t have to remove everything.
At the beginning of your appointment, simply tell your therapist what you would like removed and what you would prefer to keep. We can also tidy, shape or trim areas where you don’t want complete hair removal.
Massage
What types of massage does SWL offer?
SWL offers a range of massage treatments including relaxing Swedish-style massage, deep tissue massage and sports-focused treatments.
The best treatment depends on whether you’re looking primarily for relaxation, general muscular tension relief or more focused work.
What can I expect from an SWL massage?
Our massages are professional treatments, but we also want the experience to feel relaxed, comfortable and completely unselfconscious.
You can choose from relaxing Swedish massage, deeper pressure or more focused bodywork, and your therapist will discuss what you’re looking for before the treatment begins.
We understand that massage is a very personal experience, particularly for male clients, so there’s no need to feel awkward about your body or how comfortable you prefer to be during your treatment. Your therapist will always make the experience feel natural and relaxed.
What should I wear during my massage?
That’s largely up to you and what makes you most comfortable.
Your therapist will give you privacy to undress and prepare before returning to the treatment room. Some clients prefer to keep their underwear on, while others feel more comfortable without it, particularly for a full-body massage.
There’s no need to feel self-conscious – our therapists are accustomed to working with the male body and creating a comfortable, relaxed and judgement-free environment.
Can I tell the therapist which areas I want them to concentrate on?
Absolutely.
At the beginning of your appointment, let your therapist know about any areas of tension or discomfort and what you would like to get from the massage.
You can also ask your therapist to adjust the pressure at any point during the treatment.
Do you massage male clients only?
SWL specialises in treatments for men and our massage service has been developed around the needs of our male clientele.
Before Your Appointment
Should I shower before my treatment?
We ask clients to arrive freshly showered and with good personal hygiene, particularly for intimate treatments and massage.
Please avoid applying heavy creams, oils or moisturisers to areas being waxed immediately before your appointment.
How early should I arrive?
There is no need to arrive significantly early.
Please aim to arrive at your scheduled appointment time. Arriving too early may mean another client is still being treated and we may not be able to let you in immediately.
What if I’m late?
Please contact us as soon as possible if you are running late.
We will always try to accommodate you, but appointments normally need to finish at their scheduled time so that the next client isn’t kept waiting. Your treatment may therefore need to be shortened.
Can I have a treatment if I’m unwell?
If you’re feeling unwell, have a contagious illness or have a skin infection affecting the treatment area, please contact us before attending.
In some circumstances it may be safer to rearrange your appointment.
After Waxing
What should I avoid after waxing?
For approximately 24–48 hours after waxing, we recommend avoiding activities that can cause excessive heat, sweating, friction or irritation to the freshly waxed skin.
This can include strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, very hot showers, swimming and heavily fragranced products.
After intimate waxing, avoiding excessive friction while the skin settles is also advisable.
How can I prevent ingrown hairs?
Regular gentle exfoliation and moisturising can help.
Allow the skin to settle for a couple of days after waxing before beginning exfoliation. Your therapist can also recommend suitable aftercare based on your skin and the area treated.
When should I book my next wax?
For most clients, 4–6 weeks works well.
Your therapist may recommend a slightly different schedule depending on your hair growth.
Booking & Payments
How do I book?
The easiest way to book is through the SWL online booking system.
Select your preferred location, treatment, therapist and available appointment time.
Do you require a deposit?
Currently, SWL does not require a deposit for standard bookings.
We prefer to operate on good faith and make booking as simple as possible for our clients, without asking for an upfront payment.
We really appreciate clients respecting this approach by attending their appointments or giving us as much notice as possible if plans change.
Please note that if we experience an increase in late cancellations or missed appointments, we may need to introduce deposits or advance payments in the future.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans sometimes change.
If you need to cancel or rearrange your appointment, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice wherever possible. This gives us a reasonable opportunity to offer the appointment to another client.
At present, we do not routinely charge a cancellation fee. However, repeated late cancellations may result in us requiring a deposit or advance payment before accepting future bookings.
We hope that by keeping our policy flexible and trusting our clients, we can continue offering appointments without compulsory deposits or cancellation charges.
What happens if I don’t turn up?
Please let us know if you are unable to attend your appointment.
A no-show means that your therapist has reserved that time specifically for you and, at short notice, we are unlikely to be able to offer the appointment to somebody else.
We currently choose not to charge clients automatically for missed appointments, and we would really like to keep it that way.
However, clients who repeatedly miss appointments without notice may be required to pay a deposit or the full treatment price in advance for future bookings.
Continued levels of no-shows may also mean that SWL has to introduce a deposit or cancellation-fee policy for all bookings.
What payment methods do you accept?
Payment options are shown during the booking process, and card payment is available for treatments.
Your Privacy & Comfort
Is my appointment private?
Yes. Treatments take place in a private treatment room with you and your therapist.
Your privacy and discretion are important to us.
Will you judge my body or body hair?
No.
We see different bodies, hair growth patterns, skin types and grooming preferences every day. You don’t need to lose weight, get fitter, trim beforehand or make yourself look a certain way before coming to SWL.
Just arrive as you are.
Can I ask questions before booking?
Absolutely.
If you’re unsure which service to choose, have a question about a treatment or want to check whether a treatment is suitable for you, please contact us before booking.
We’d much rather help you choose the correct appointment than have you book something you’re unsure about.
Still have a question?
If there’s anything we haven’t covered here, please get in touch with SWL Male Grooming.
We’re always happy to answer genuine questions about our treatments, explain what to expect and help you choose the right service.
